Who we are...
TAW Radio Controlled Car Club (TAWRCCC) was formed by experienced core members of the North Devon Model Society (NDMS) with a growing interest in radio controlled cars. Many of us had built and raced cars back in the 1980s. Some had even run RC car clubs before.
The NDMS is a very active model club meeting every Thursday at Roundswell Community Centre and is open to modellers of all ages and abilities. Every August the NDMS holds a charity model show at The Park Community School, Barnstaple with several thousand pounds being raised to date. The mental health and social benefits of model making are now only just being recognised and are being developed by the NDMS outreach program KIDS&KITS. This is something we intend to build on with TAWRCCC.
Back in the day...
Radio controlled car racing, particularly 1/10 scale electric ‘off-road’, exploded in popularity in the 1980s with clubs being set up nationwide. These clubs were massively popular with school children, who learned practical skills building, maintaining, and racing their cars. The image below is of a track that was built by a group of school children one summer in the 80s and quickly became one of the most popular tracks in the South East of England. Sadly it was lost to developers becoming an industrial estate. For many life then got in the way and their hobby had to be put on hold.

Today...
RC cars are back! Those school kids from back in the 80s have returned to the hobby and want to race again, build on what they have learned and create somewhere special to race. What’s more, many have kids of their own and want to help them learn new skills and enjoy from the hobby they once loved.
TAWRCCC
So what makes TAWRCCC different from any other RC car club. Well, this is the ethos of our club.
- Racing clean, quiet electric RC cars.
- A club open to and welcoming all ages and abilities.
- A focus on affordable entry level grass roots racing
- A place where you can race ready to run (RTR) cars as well as competition kits without prejudice.
- A club able to race a wide variety of classes and support all aspects of the RC car hobby.
- An affordable membership.
- A safe, friendly, fun environment.
- Inspiring young members to learn the new skills of building, setting up and racing RC cars with respect for others.
- Provide an environment where different generations of the same family can share and enjoy a day of racing together.
Our Goal...
We want to establish a clean, tidy, permanent on road and off road tracks in North Devon with facilities to accommodate racers of all abilities as well as host other clubs. Something like what you see below. Ideally we would have an astro-turf track and a tarmac track for 1/10 scale electric cars. These are the most popular classes historically and today. So, if you have some land, if you can help, or if you know someone who can, maybe you can give us a call. Sera – 07936 817468 sera@staplesandvine.com

In 1992 radio controlled car racing featured on ‘Blue Peter’ and saw an 8 year old boy race and win in the ‘Blue Peter Garden’.
He went on to become seven time Formula 1 world champion, his name, Lewis Hamilton. It’s amazing what this hobby can lead to….
We hope you share our ethos and goals and we look forward to seeing you trackside soon.
